Shrewsbury, Massachusetts is a suburban Worcester County town with a population of more than 35,600 within its 21.6 square miles. The town, which was settled in 1722, is named after a community in England. Shrewsbury is bordered by Worcester, Boylston, West Boylston, Grafton, Northborough, and Westborough. It is located in central Massachusetts, about an hour away from Boston. Shrewsbury is broken down into sections or “districts.” It has been home to many notable residents, including the last survivor of the Titanic, a Revolutionary War general, a co-inventor of contraceptive pills, and many famous politicians and artists. The town has a representative town meeting type of government with a town manager and a board of selectmen.
In 1976, during Shays’ Rebellion, Shrewsbury was an encampment sight for hundreds of those who marched on the Worcester Court House in an attempt to prevent debt collections.
