With nearly 27,000 people at the 2010 Census, Stoughton is a middle-class town in the southwestern suburbs of Boston. In fact, its location puts it on the way from Boston to Providence, Rhode Island or to Cape Cod. Stoughton has a reputation for being affordable and accessible, possibly because of a history as a manufacturing town. Early in its history, Stoughton had a shoe manufacturing industry; it later became the home of factories making rubber products, textiles and steel. As industrialization has fallen off, however, many of those companies have moved or closed. Like all Norfolk County residents, Stoughton residents use the Dedham Superior Court when they are charged with serious felony crimes like distribution of child pornography or sexual assault. Those facing charges of statutory rape and other less serious crimes use the Stoughton District Court at 1288 Central Street, which also serves Sharon, Avon and Canton.
Take Action Quickly on Serious Sex ChargesIf you’re accused of a serious sex crime, don’t wait before calling an experienced defense lawyer for help. Sex crimes aren’t like other crimes; they often attract a negative emotional reaction from jurors and the wider community. That’s bad news if you’re facing trial, because juries can be biased against people accused of certain crimes. It’s also bad news if the media publishes the charges against you, which can lead to early judgment in the “court of public opinion.” Not only can this show you who your friends really are and strain romantic relationships, but it can lead to losing your job or other negative consequences at work. And of course, sex crimes can carry long prison sentences, and an obligation to register as a sex offender after release.
Attorney Stephen Neyman has defended people accused of serious sex crimes in Massachusetts since 1990. In more than two decades, he has helped many Massachusetts residents win acquittals in court, reduced or dismissed charges and fair, reasonable plea bargains. Despite what some clients may think, there are many ways to defend sex charges, even if it seems like the odds are stacked against you. In sex crimes, credibility is key because there isn’t usually a witness; the accuser’s story is simply compared to the defendant’s. That means police officers have to choose who they believe, and they don’t always make the right call. We look deeply into the facts and the circumstances of the accusation to determine whether the accuser may have another motivation, or be under the influence of someone who does. In some cases, accusers may also have changed their stories after regretting an encounter that they originally consented to. When this is the case, we use physical evidence, personal circumstances, psychiatric profiles and more to weaken the accuser’s credibility and bolster our client’s.
